Battery and polarity question

Hi guys. My husband is in a wheelchair so I'm now the model A mechanic and things are not going well. Today I hooked up a low amp. trickle charger to the battery, which was very low, but for the first five minutes I had negative wire from the charger on the positive post of the battery and the positive wire from the charger on the negative post. My husband is wondering if I have reversed the polarity? Ruined the battery?

Thanks for your help, Debi

I doubt you have done any real harm to the battery, hook it up correctly and charge until it is fully charged. 6 volt if the battery is 6 volt.

Usually if you hook them up wrong the charger will keep kicking out as the circuit breaker detects a reversed polarity.

Dont be afraid to ask any questions here....lots of free advice.

Was the battery completely dead when you connected the trickle charger? If so you may have started a reverse charge on the battery. What happened when you reconnected the charger the right way? Hopefully the charger wasn't ruined.

I have to agree with Dennis. The charger will have a circuit breaker to protect it self. Those trickle chargers put out very low current and shouldn't be a problem for either. My 2¢
