Barn find 1940 ford conv. Value

So let me get this straight, if you guys had this car in your garage and were looking to sell it, all you would ask was $12000.00 and probably end up with $10000 and be happy? Am i that far out of the loop with value? I thought when the top goes down, the price goes up? Guess not. Thanks for the opinions though, maybe ill just pass and let it sit for another 30 years.

What is the guy wanting? From one picture there is not much to go by. Pay what you feel is right by you. If you pay 30,000 for it and put 15,000 in it you will have a nice car but I think you would be under water on it at today's prices. I see people asking 50,000 for the cars but they are not selling them.

Yep, I think you are out of the loop with this present economy. Now, we are going to have to import corn to meet the EPA ethanol mandates. It is not my fault so do not get mad at us.

You never posted additional pictures as requested. I think that year of convertible is kind of ugly with the top up. I would rather have a 36 roadster.

If I had that car in my garage and it was half way decent, the car would not be for sale.

I am sure if you asked his best cash price and have a boat load of cash on you then I think it would work.

I have purchased my 38 Ford 1/2 ton years back. He was asking 16K, by the end of the day I left with the truck for 8K

Same with my 57 Chevy wagon...... He was asking 16k........ I offered $8,000 Cash and it was mine.

I would handle this as Gumpy stated. If you offer him 2500, he will do as I have done in the past, escort you to the door, and bid you farewell. You most likely will have to pay 20k +for the car. I sold one like this a while back in that price range and it was not as good as this one looks.

Don't look like dirt floor to me & he has pans to keep the tires off the cement. There is a tarp also that was on it. Chrome is missing from rear 1/4 & as was stated grille center is missing. This a project & should be priced accordingly. You never stated wht the seller was askng & never furnished mor detail or pictures. We don't have WE-GE boards or ESP so giving you a reasonable answer is just a crap shoot. What that car is worth to one person may be way off base to another. lot of car sites of cars for sale so do you homework & give it your best shot. Money talks & ******** walks.

theres the "GOOOOD STUFF!:)
and theres the other stuff!!

40 DeLuxe is goood stuff! a drop top makes it top dog in the 40 department! (next to a woodie)

id have that rag top washed up, vacumed, windows cleaned, any piece of trim, taillight lense, hubcap missing replaced, a good weekend scrubbing it making it look like something without putting much money in it, id have it lookin good, running or not and NO WAY would i sell it for 12k!!!

id even run the buffer over it. id have that baby cleaned up sitting in the driveway on display with te old whitewalls all westlyed clean, then pretty soon id be cleaning the gas tank messing around and pretty soon running. then driving it around the block, now whats it worth?

It's hard to buy a car from someone that doesn't know what he wants for his car and wants you to make him an offer. He is usually fishing to find out what its worth. If I could buy that car for $12,500.00 as it sits, I would think I got a deal. After looking at it in person would maybe go to $16,500.00

there 16,500.00 put another 800 to 1000 in it.
300 for a decent original grill and center.
20. for a couple tubes.
100. misc chrome & a hubcap.
200. for misc.
a couple days cleaning and fixing.
setting out in the driveway guys would be forcing 22 - 23,000 on ya and its not even for sale! ;)

thats how i look at things!

You might could put that little of money in it. If that's all that wrong with it. I know it was stored in doors but was there water left in it. I have been in some barn that get pretty cold. Allso why was it parked? Usually there is a reason why a car was parked. Around here they were parked because a person could buy another car for what it would cost to fix the old one that is broke. Remember you can't see in that motor or any of the other mechanical stuff.

It's not a 1960 Studebaker Lark---- It's a red 40 Ford Convertible!!! I wouldn't care if it had a motor or not.

Any clue what a barn find 1940 ford deluxe convertible might be worth. Body is supposed to be excellent, but has been sitting since the 70's. The usual will probably need fixed to get it running again, and the top is torn supposedly, and chrome faded and paint was a bright red that has faded, but other than that it is a solid canidate. Just dont want to over pay, i know the economy is not what it used to be, and the values have dropped in the hobby. Any opinions appreciated, or if you know of a similar car that has sold lately, it would be appreciated. Thanks

Ok, I was not going to say anything...because these guys that responded have given you a wealth of info :) !
However, I just purchased an old ford and am a unhappy camper. I SHOULD have done more asking HERE..as you are now doing.
From your writing, You have never seen this car. Take cash/go see the car in person to inspect it/ use what has been given to you here and make offer...from an informed standpoint,eh!
This car may be butchered underneath, have a rusted out floorpan, also as stated the obvious things (i.e.-engine/trans/rear) may be junk value.

Only one suggestion that you have been given..I disagree with. Don't TRUST that any seller is Mr. Nice Guy..or even a decent person, when it comes to taking your $! For example, I spoke with my seller and his wife for a very long time...long distance. The seller is a very wealthy man and said that I would be very happy with his stock driver...with NO ISSUES:eek:
I realize that you have said that your searching for value help...as I was. But DON'T buy long distance without seeing...unless you've got to have it and don't care how much you get for the $. Good luck and let us know how it goes, as we should help each other in these cases.

It sounds to me like it is SPRYSTANG'S car and he is the one fishing.

You can loose your *** just as well or more on a car like this. Say you buy it for 25,000 and it needs the motor rebuilt. Odds are not going to be a stock rebuild. So you put around 5,000 in a motor you are up to 30,000. Then if there is any other mechanical stuff to take car of. Will the top need to be replaced, interior replaced, gauges rebuilt. Do you leave the paint or have it reprinted? With all the money spent so far you will want a nice paint job and that will be up into the thousands. If you do get it repainted and you get down to metal what if you find rust or some old crapy patch job that has to be taken car of. If you have hired someone to all this you are probably around 50,000 dollars. If you have seen people are asking around this but not getting it. Check eBay and other places. A car is a car be a 40 ford or a studebaker.

Hi, it's one sweet car and most of us on here would love it in our shed. The other way to give it a value is buy going in reverse.General opinion seems to be that 38k will buy you a nice driver so start there and work back.A new top will be about 8k upholstery and paint the same each, 4k for a new engine, a couple of grand for brakes, tyres, oils, battery, etc.maybe a grand or so for missing bits and that just leaves body work.A soft top will most certainly have some floor rust, unless it's been babied all its life.I just added all that up and I'm minus $6400 so he needs to give you money[haha]but you can see how easy it is to get stung. Many restorations cost way more than the cars are worth. On the other hand read Marts post on his 33 coupe, he just fixed what needed doing, and has ended up with a low buck neat old ford.As the others have said you need to talk to the guy, climb all over it and work out what its worth to you.Cheers Tony.
