I'm a little embarrassed:o to ask but, what exactly is a "BANGER" motor?
I was under the impression that it was a modified motor but I have seen stock, junk, rusted, rebuilt, and modified hot rod motors listed as BANGER motors.

They were known as "Four Bangers" as derisive term iffn you were sportin a V8.
Example: One drag racer to another, What ya got in thar? a four banger?

Ok, yep I got that part. We have always said that forever. 2 banger, 4 banger, ect. referring to the number of cylinders of coarse.
I just thought a BANGER motor had some other meaning. maybe not.

Wish I had 8 only got 6 and runnin on 4. May be you were thinking about the old 1 lunger hit & miss engines.

Matt,
Well, I'm a little embarrassed to answer but, IMO...if you've 'invested' a number of thousands of dollars these days or back when, into what is basically an A/B Ford block..which has four cylinders...you end up with what is generally acknowledged as a four cyl Ford engine ('28/'32 ?) that is somewhat equipped and reminisent of an era when that type equipment/block was available for producing speed/hopped up in the day....ergo: four banger denoteing power/speed equipment beyond the norm.

BTW, IMO, people.... who use this term to describe a model A/B block (generally for sale) that is stock/funky/incomplete/not running/ no speed work or equipment...haven't a clue:o. Kinda like (MIS)representing/selling a Model A vehicle as RESTORED with a stock original four cyl engine or with V8 sbc :) !

PS -No need be embarrassed at all, as I remember on the ole Fordbarn one time when this term (Banger engine) was used....a ole guy that seemed to be a loong term Model A person....asked the same question:eek:

Hmm, I thot that 'Banger' was an English muffin/cookie/bisquit ??

Back in the day, not sure exactly what day, young guys with A bones would drive along about 40 or 50 and turn the ignition off and press the gas pedal as far as it would go and at the same time they would retard the spark. Then they turned the ignition back on and BANG! A lot of the time they would blow the muffler and continue to drive it anyway. Then instead of an A bone they had a Banger. Just a stray thought! Model A's were by far the most common 4 cylinder cars on the road.
Actually the modified 4 cylinder engines used in race cars or 4 cylinder hot rods were called 4 barrel's until people became confused when the 4 barrel carburetor came into common use.

Hey Bill,
Yup remember doing such! Nowadays...to achieve the BANG , but save the muffler, they weld a spark plug in the end of the tail pipe to accomplish the explosion.

I remember a guy that had a 38 caddy coupe with dual pipes that had a "T" coil settup to fire spark plugs in his tailpipes. Just shot out a lot of flames, quite a spectacular show. He would wind it up and turn the coil on and turn the ignition off with the throttle wide open. Just bellowed flames for 2 or 3 feet.

Hmm, just have to be careful, depending on where you reside, as some places frown on that activity (spark/tailpipe flames)and have law regarding having such fun:rolleyes:

If your car has a choke just pull that and turn on the coil, it wont make a lot of noise, just a lot of fire out the tail pipes.
One thing I use to do to keep people from sitting or leaning on my car was to hook up a T coil to the body of the car. Not going to say how, because I do not think it would be a good thing to do now days. But it sure did work.

I'm surprised one of our British mates haven't responded.

Actually, to the Brits, "bangers" are a sausage..........as in "bangers and mash" being a serving of mashed potato with a or a couple sausages on top.

Well, I guess I better clarify. The time that this car I spoke of was in the late 40's. This back in the time before P C police controlling every aspect of your life.We had speed laws, noise laws, fender laws, and a few more restrictions that came and went.

You know you're old when you know what a banger is, but have to ask, "What is an Avatar? (Don't bother answering me, I already have asked and now know... I just don't know how to put a picture on mine.)
