After struggling with this for a long time, I think I have it finally figured out. You don't want to run more than 4 AMPS through the points to avoid burning them prematurely. A practical application of a variation of Ohm's Law will tell you what you need to have for total resistance through the coil (coil resistance plus ballast resistor resistance).
R=V/I
Where "V" is voltage, "R" is resistance (ohms), and "I "is current (amps).
12/4=3 ohms
6/4=1.5 ohms
Bypassing the ballast resistor for easier staring is not part of this equation.
