Bakelite repair

Anyone have any recommendations for repairing the bakelite brush holders for the powerhouse generators. I have 3 that could be repaired, just not sure what has proven to work well. I am also considering reproducing the brush holders and looking for suggestions on a suitable selfcuring plastic that would be rigid enough for making them out of.

Thanks

Rod,

Do you have a picture of the part. Or perhaps a Ford blueprint. How about using a piece of phenolic material to machine it?

I clean the parts with brake cleaner or electrical contact cleaner, then glue them with JB WELD. As soon as the glue starts setting up I scrape off the excess with a razor blade. Let it set over night, then use a black felt tip to cover the repair. It comes out fairly strong and looks pretty good.

On the old Fordbarn I had posted pictures and described the process a few years ago.

I have had luck in the past by gluing the bakelite back together with super glue.

If the ring is still intact, but has a crack, then I also use super glue to seal the crack and add strength.

Wouldn't it be nice if those brush holders were reproduced!

Re: picture

I have considered the phenolic, but without a lathe I am not sure I would be happy with the results. Looking more into making a mold out of hardwood and pouring a resin into it, easier to keep the proccess affordable and consistant. Rod

Thanks for the tips. I was not sure JB weld and super glue would hold up, but it sounds like it will. Going to try ot fix 3 of the 3 brush and one 5 brush soon. Rod
