Bad weekend

I got t-boned by a stop sign runner yesterday. She hit my passenger side rear wheel and it sent the back end up in the air and I rolled the car. Everyone is OK but I am wondering if you think the body is too far gone for repair or should I just look for a new body/car.

Sorry to hear that you got hit and that everyone is ok-well physically at least. Make sure you check the other drivers phone account as they probably were texting/on the phone at the time. But, from my eye, I think the body is done for. Sorry.

Well,walking away is the good part.Talking about fixing before the insurance companies and law enforcement have at it is jumping the gun a little.I can tell you that getting a look at his/her phone before the law,insurance company,and the lawyers get a look at it can be a problem.You will get to see it,but not before the law gives you the OK.Heard and saw that with my own ears and eyes in a courtroom.Judge standing up,knuckles on the desk,yelling,you had NO right to DEMAND the womans phone at the scene of the accident.It was up to law enforcement to take and analyze the contents.Woman was scared,gave the guy her phone,and the judge kicked the phone evidence.
 
The car is going to need a 100% restoration. There is going to be major damage to the rear end and the frame in addition to the obvious damage to the body which needs to be taken to bare metal to find and correct all hidden damage.


The big issue is who's gonna pay. If the other driver is at fault they are going to need pay you enough for a replacement of "like, kind, and quality" or the FULL repairs. If they don't have the deep pockets (and about 40% chance they don't even have any insurance, much less whats needed to fix what they broke) then you are going to have to settle with your insurance which is determined by your contract with them.
 
First and foremost, glad that you are alright. I don't see much point in fixing your car based on the extent of the damage. Salvage what you can if your insurance company will allow that and scrap the rest after the settlement. We will be interested to know how the insurance scenario plays out. What a shame.
 
How intact did the gas tank stay?

Do you plan to buy the wreck and part it out? Wouldn't blame you if you didn't.
 
Were the occupants wearing seat belts? I’m just curious because people argue a lot about seat belts but we rarely get any data about their performance in accidents.
 
I know that I am jumping the gun here but I will see where it goes through my insurance (Hagerty) when her insurance company (State Farm) is ultimately responsible.
The gas tank survived very well, it was leaking a little out the cap when on its side. I asked the firemen to help me push it back on 4 wheels to eliminate the fuel leaking on the hot exhaust manifold and they refused. I went to the curb and recruited 3 guys and we pushed it back on 4 wheels right in front of them. Im not sure why they didn’t want it back on its wheels.
I was afraid this body is too far gone for repairs but wanted to ask others opinion. I’ll keep everyone abreast of how this turns out thru the insurance company.
This has been in my family since 1968, my father and grandfather rebuilt it in 1970, even had original Babbitt repoured and I have the receipts. Such a sad day.

I was the only one in the vehicle and no seat belts installed in the car. I’ve been thinking about the crash and really don’t know if I would have faired better wearing a lap belt. I stayed in the car but I know I hit the passenger roof on my way around. The steering wheel is bent pretty bad from me trying to hang on. Im thinking it may have helped a little if I would have had seat belts but who knows. Im still kicking and that’s what matters.

So sorry to hear about your accident Greg. Glad that you were not badly injured. Your Model A looked very nice before this accident. Hope that Insurance pays for a replacement vehicle.
 
I can add recent actual experience to the seatbelt question. Last year my friend and his wife were at an intersection in his 31 RHD coupe. No seat belts. He turned right at a stop sign, evidently into the path of an incoming car, which hit him in the left rear wheel. The car spun but did not roll. When his wife turned to see if he was OK he was not in the car. Somehow he was thrown out and lay on the road just in front of the other car, which had stopped in time to miss him. Neither of the 2 in the car can remember clearly what happened. His wife was looking to the left when the car hit the on the right. My friend sustained a brain injury from impact with the road and some lacerations. He was in the brain injury recovery clinic for many months.
When he came out he had to use a walking frame due to poor balance. He died last year from a pre- existing cancer that was partly removed a year before the accident but metastercised throughout his body while he was recovering from the accident.
If he had had any kind of restraint to hold him in the car he would have survived the crash. Exactly how he got thrown out is unknown, even though another club member was right behind him in another Model A.
It apparently all happened so fast and neither of the club members saw the oncoming car on the undulating, tree-shaded and curved main road with an 80 kph speed limit.
Damage to the coupe was not bad and it was sold for a very good price and it is now rebuilt
The insurance company also paid out fully and let him keep the wreck too.

Good to hear that the tank didn't rupture.

As a 56 year motorcyclist, I don't trust anyone to stop. But they sure can surprise you! I have stories.

Amen to that! I finally gave up the bike about three years ago at about 55 years in. My experience is that 80% of the people don't see you and 20% are aiming for you. And 100% of them don't give a damn.
 
Greg, I'm very pleased to hear that you all walked away from that. These cars don't take collisions well so IMO, it is up to us to do what we can to improve our chance when somethng like this happens. I have seat belts in all of my Model As even though none of them have been inspected and approved. Regulations make that almost impossible. I say I would rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6.
 
JAY JAY: You hit it right on riding a motorcycle. I just turned 80 and stopped this month, between my failing balance and the rising number of idiots aiming at me it was time to play it safe.
