bad shocks

I'm fairly sure my 47 coupes shocks are bad. Can I rebuild them, or should I just buy new ones. New is really expensive. What about tube shocks, is there a modification for these? Mac's only list new ones for the front, what about the rear. Thanks in advance for any info

Bill is probably the most ethical guy you will meet. he does beautiful work on shocks. He's done a number of them for me and I have been very pleased every time. Stay far away from Apple Hydraulics... far, far away...

FYI, Bill will be on the New England Ford Barn tour this weekend, but should be home and ready to go early next week. LouB.

Houdaille dampers do require a person to either find the original type tools or make your own as necessary. When they are right they work well. An old tube shock kit, although harder to find today, would not be a bad alternative unless you have a purist ideology.

i have the stock tube shock kits for my '47, just put on the rear front is still to come. here's some pics of others (i don't have pics of mine).

Thanks gentelmen for the input. No I'm not that purist, just want easy way out. 1Oldtimer, Any welding necessary on installing those shocks and where did you get them? My local old ford parts place has a kit but says the back ones require welding a support for the bottom. Thanks

Sorry for the delay (I don't check here much), no welding for the rear or front. I have yet to put the fronts on (friction shocks work ok), but the rear made a huge difference since I had no shocks whatsoever. I bought the kits off of ebay and craigslist, they are the old retro kit's or factory '48 tube shock set-up. I think C&G ford has a similar kit.
