I replaced my points along with rotor, distributor, coil wire and plugs on my 29 CPU last weekend. I also re-set the timing for the first time. I was anxious to see any improvement in the performance of the engine. But, not so much to my own surprise, it wouldn't start. No fire to any plug. I re-checked all settings, gaps, and timing, and still no fire. Since it was running before I started the tune up, I decided to start replacing all the new parts with the old parts until it hopefully started. Through my process of elimination, when I replaced the new points with the old ones, it fired right up.. Considering the basic nature of points, how could they be bad? I bought them from a reliable dealer near me that re-builds engines, so I am confident he gave me the right part. Has anyone else had this problem and what is your recommend for replacement points? Also, my truck came with the NuRex spark advance already installed. It has the modern distributor plate and points.
