Can anyone ,on Ford Barn tell me how a fan could come off an hit the radiator, while driving.Today taken my 1934 Ford truck going home after,a nice 38 mile drive,I hear ban,a small ban,so still driving 2 miles to go till, home a big bang.Pull over to side of the road lift the hood, big hole in the radiator, the old fan just laying on the motor, two mile,s from home.:( Rickmass

Machine screws that hold the fan on were not tightened properly. Blade has a crack in it and it finally turns loose. That's a couple of ways.

Coulda been worse. I knew a guy who opened the hood on his Ford and lost an eye when the fan let go.

One of my potential nightmares....I am sooo sorry that happened to you....How does the fan attach on your truck, I assume it is on the end of the generator? Bolts were loose? Or did the motor move forward and the fan hit the radiator...do you have anti chatter rods, they keep my 59AB in place in my '35......since Henry used that transverse buggy spring the whole drive train can shift forward and backward in relation to the frame...I am not familiar with '34's, , I think the anti chatter rods came later...I have no idea what stabilizes the 34 drive train.......what a bummer...so sorry....Matt in Alameda

Same thing on my '38, but I caught it soon enough to just kiss the radiator enough to leak. I wound up losing one radiator tube. It was caused by the shaft nut backing off, allowing the fan to walk forward. I had rebuilt the generator a few hundred miles earlier, and hadn't locked the nut tight enough.

Now I have good news for you: Report the failure to your insurance company under your comprehensive insurance. They will pay for an NOS radiator and any other damage except the fan itself, which being "defective", was the cause of the damage. Other damage being maybe a broken manifold and a bent generator armature? Whatever, including shipping charges, you're covered. Now does that make your day any better? :D

By the way, my original radiator is now my spare!
