YES YES YES; Well not me but a car I worked on, it was a club car, I hate to tell you this it was a nice 32 5 window coupe, we gutted this car, making a drag car, we took everything out like dash, firewall, complete floor, and on and on. drilled holes in the frame, wishbone, axle, etc. Firewall/floor was sheeted with one piece aluminum all the way back in the trunk, this was thin air-craft shin, the engine was a built 3/8 x 3/8 about as big as you could build one back then 1948/50/52/ ?? in the very early years of Pomona, it gust strip of asafalt on unpaved parking lot of the Los Angeles County Fair grounds, no bleachers, a rope line, and some power poles laying along the side of the strip. I build the headers for what they were, three tubes on each side, welded to flange with 45 deg. 2inch tube back to a flat strip bolted to the Xmember, When it BLOW I was standing about 100 feet down strip from the starting line ( I wanted to here how it sounded, all out in low gear ) When it blow I though the crank came out the bottom of the engine, there were parts everywhere, smoke,no fire, oil and the smell, I will never forget the smell, as I ran to the car I keep telling him to stop the car, it just keep rolling.... we had stripped all the breaks off, all but the emergancy liver and the rear brakes, with just the rods there, no real thought to stopping the car,When I got to the car he was a mess, screaming, and bloody, and trying to clime/crawl out, all and all what went on the there he was in pritty good shape, with some small parts stuck in him, easy for me to say, I did pull one of the bolts that hold the pressure plate to the flywheel out of the back of his lower thigh, at his request,... and my limeted Boy Shout first aid.
It looked like someone took a chainsaw and cut the bellhousing off and front part of the trans, ALL GONE .... " THE FLYWHEEL" Is what did it, that and a lot RPMs. ..and when he pushed in the clutch, the flywheel was cut (chopped ) way to much, done in hi school, shop class.... Memories mostly good some not so good. ..Take a good look at the picture Brendan put up, it was cut deep on the back and real close to the pressure plate bolts, and I agree with "quickgene" the stamped steel bellhousing keep a lot of stuff in .....sorry this is so long OLD...BILL ,,,and ok..goahead and yak-yak at me spiiling.... tee-tee teeeee
