Bad Brakes

I'm doing a Rebuild on my 29 coupes brake system. So far I need to replace everything. The roller tracks front and rear are shot. The rollers are ether flat or frozen. The Brake lining was worn to the rivets or oil soaked. Wood ruff key missing on rear toggle shaft on one side. Most of the cotter keys where too long And bent at an angle and not allowing roller pins and rollers to rotate causing flat spots. One Rear roller track bracket was welded to backing plate. Brake drums need to be replaced. When I pulled the drums things look ok until I started cleaning. The fronts are just as bad. After inspecting my brakes I see how mechanical Brakes get a bad name. I don't think I would go around the block with out doing a complete brake job on any old barn find. They don't look to Bad in the photos.

And are you saying that hydraulics if installed incorrectly like the mechanical brakes on your car would not have had a problem, or are you saying that any brakes installed\maintained poorly are dangerous?

I saying bad Brakes are Bad brakes no matter what type. My Brakes look like they used worn parts to patch.

I was surprised when I re-did my brakes the right way, they really work well! My brakes previously were maintained, clean, and quite serviceable but did not stop without standing on the pedal at times so I can see that with your brakes you would want to fix them like new. Yes model a brakes may kind of work with a lot of owner neglect but it is not the fault of the Ford.

I guess you know that one spring on the e-brake in the first picture is in the wrong hole. The second picture looks OK.

I recently worked on a coupe that someone had cut the rods short and re-threaded them to get more pedal. The front levers were angled back!! That was just the beginning of what was the most worn out brake system I have ever encountered. Everything, and I mean everything, was worn to useless. Nails for cotter pins, where they were not missing entirely, spun bearings, bushings worn through into the housing, clevis pins worn into a zig zag... The car had a nice paint job and interior tho'...it looked good, just did not stop. Or go either, but that's another story.

Dennis,

Good for you !!!! Brakes and tires are the most important safety things on any car. You will never be sorry redoing your brake system correct, even though it will be costly.

Anyone that's driven and Austin Seven will know what poor brakes really are! Herbert Austin was famous for saying "Good brakes encourage bad driving"
