Backup camera for a 6 volt car

"34Fordy" asked about my backup camera on Mike's '36 thread. I didn't want to clutter that up, so I'll answer here.

I've got a experimental power unit that converts 6 volts positive to clean 12 volt negative. I've been screwing around with "convenience" devices; a "Handsfree" cell phone device, a CD player. a Tire Pressure Monitor, and a backup camera. The backup camera was just a cheapy from Amazon to test it out. It ended up working so good I got addicted to it. (The fact I have one in my DD helped the addiction along.) I removed the radio and installed factory block-off plates and mounted the screen over the radio face. power to the unit is routed through a stock Ford backup light switch. It really works slick. Don't do it, or you too will become addicted.

Could this be mounted and be constantly on to be used as a rear view mirror?

When you get right down to it, electronics has come so far in the last few years, that my setup is "overkill". You can get a simple voltage booster from Amazon and such places for around $20. Polarity doesn't matter much any more, because most of the items have plastic cases and two wires for input. Also, they are very tolerant to voltages spikes from generators and draw very little current. Take a little care in picking the converter and you can add any 12 volt accessory you want. I'm sorry I can't recommend one, but my buddy (the elctronics wizard) made me the fancy one I have.

I don't see any reason you couldn't use it as a rear view mirror. In that case, I would buy a spare (they're that cheap) to have around.
