Backfire and gas in oil

If it has a history of running ok ,if not then check you don't have the early manifold with the Holly or Ford carb ,the heat riser gremlin ?? .Ted
 
Maybe the new fuel pump is too strong. It's the one with the metal bowl on top. I had the one with the glass sediment bowl and replaced it with this one. It said it could be for a 46.
 
I would say when changing the pump you picked up some crud and its now in the idol jets ,Remove the carb and blast out with air ,pulling the choke is a indicator
