With the baffles in there, your not going to get it very clean by putting anything in that's very big.Cut it open like a watermelon, clean it then seal it and weld back up,
Ron; A couple of 10 oz cans of Red Devil Lewis Lye (drain cleaner) in 5 Gal of Hot Hot water will melt all the varnish out. Leave it in till the tank is clean. Use gloves and face mask. Acid for the rust next. Walla, new tank. The lye mix is also good to to remove paint off parts.
I had a Ranchero that sat for years with a half tank of gas in it. It was full of rust and crud. We dropped the tank and dumped a can of sharp rocks and a gallon of gas into the tank. One person on each end and shook the tank back and forth for a minute. Dumped out the gas and did same again several times until the gas came out clean. Ran the car for 15 years afterwards and didn't have any problems.
Use the POR 15 method....Start with 2 gals of Marine clean + 2 gals of water ...let it sit for several days at least... turn it over every day. Look for another thread on here with more details.
I recommend you take it to a radiator shop. They deal with all the chemicals. After a couple of days you pick it up and 'bingo', all done. I have done that several times; it works for me. ;-)
Ron, I have done this a few times and it worked for me. Feed a long chain into the tank a couple of pounds of nails and a couple gallons of parts washer solvent. Put the neck and cap on and throw it into the back of a pickup drive it around wherever you go for a week or so. Then I washed it out real good. Used the tank sealer from eastman. Good luck
