back fires

i started my 46 ford today. it had not been run in about 1 month. on excel pops loudly from exhaust. at idle it runs like it only running on 7 cylinders. i was thinking ether spark plugs or cap and rotor...or stuck exhaust valve hope not . plugs are old and no idea how old my cap is. ideas are welcome .

Best way to figure it out is to do a compression check and determine if it's the valves. Electrical on a flathead is a matter of taking the plug out and grounding it against the engine block and starting the engine. Best done in low light. If you can see the blue flash it's firing. Seems doubtful it would run at all if it was the carb. Old troubleshooter theory is if iy has fire and fuel it ought to hit. I like Marvel Mystery Oil. Some in the gas, some in the oil, and some behind the ear: better than cologne.

If it ran ok a month ago,I'd dribble some MMO down the carb while running (not you,the car).LOL. Probably a sticky valve. It can't be anything too major.

maybe she wants a gift? ill fix it and let you people know what it was. thanks once again. might even be some moisture got in cap. i do run mmo in every tank of gas i get. last time this happened it was one spark plug had fouled .
