Would anyone know the grade of babbit to use on the A bearings,
Also a supplier in Australia.
Thanks Lawrie

Hi Lawrie, what you are looking for is Hoyts Number eleven. To my knowledge there are at least two types of Hoyts eleven. Eleven D for petrol engined and Eleven R for Diesel engines or as explained to me by an old time engine reuilder the R (Diesel) type is for slow reving thumping engines and would also be suitable for a vintage engine check out this link for more info.www.titaniumstudios.com/tooljunkie/paper/MC1949-BearingsEtc.pdf I did obtain some from a local engineering supplier quite some time back. I will contact them to see if they can still supply and advise you further

Here is Vince's write up on babbitt:

Babbitt

FWIW, many shops pour the grade 2 babbitt, but they do not know why. I asked and the shops and suppliers said everyone uses grade 2 and they did not know why.

Lawrie, I get mine from Purity Castings in B C Canada; the last time I got 50 pounds it was $300 + to get it from BC to SE Minnesota. I use their #11 and never had a problem with failure. I think you would have to buy the boat to get it to "Down-Under" Later, E LaBrash

Thanks Terry, have you spoken to Peter about our trip back home, just about the same as the trip up.we got home at 8.15 pm.
Lawrie

Yes Laurie, I heard from Pete. Makes for a very long day when things go wrong. Sooner or later we'll get those Gremlins out of his car. We've got two years to do so before the big trip.
