B3609 steering wheel key

I needed a steering shaft key for my 9N tractor. Not many of the tractor places even list it. I found one that did and ordered it, but it was backordered. A month later it still had not come in and he was not optimistic that it would soon. So I started doing more research. This half-moon key is used on many Ford cars steering shafts in the 40s-50s timeframe, that is why I am posting it here with a solution. One post I saw mentioned that it was a #9 key but that it was special. I didn't know if that meant wide or what. A #9 woodruff key is a 3/4" key. So I bought 10 each of #9 and #91 keys from Fastenal. A #9 is 3/16" wide and a #91 is 1/4" wide. Their p/n for a 10 pack of #9 is 1169317 and a 10 pack of #91 is 1169318. After trying them I found that the #9 fit snugly. So for anyone looking for a B-3609 steering wheel key, I recommend going to Fastenal and getting a #9 woodruff key. I leave the #91 info here in case fabrication is necessary you have a place to start bigger and cut it down. Hope this helps someone.

These are used on near all the 1932 thru end of key type steering wheel hubs so are generally sourced through repro parts sources but they are in fact a #9 Woodruff key. Fastenal is a good source for general hardware.

Guys, I might be wrong here, as I do not have the pieces in front of me. i fully believe a standard woodruff key will do the trick, but I think the proper key is slightly modified by having a flat on the round side of the D. This gives clearance for the rod that goes through for the light switch.

I might have got it wrong, but that's what is in my mind.

Mart.

Mart's correct. Without that flat on the bottom of the key you'll tear your light switch rod.

And a file will quickly change a $.69 hardware store key into $.95 (+ $8.99 shipping) repo parts dealer key.
