are both sides the same? can they be swapped just the housing. I'm trying to save some parts the left side spring perch is cracked and worn the right side looks good.

You can swap axle housings left to right and they will function either way. The early housings had the seams on the side and the correct orientation is to have the seams facing forward. Later ones had the seams on the top and either way was correct. The same held true for those that had seams on the bottom.

Thanks Tom. I Thought about the seams But could not see any other difference with the sweat running into my eyes at 99 degrees in the shade in dry and dusty Kelsey ca.

Fixing the perch is not hard.

Make up a graphite or copper bar the size of the correct ID and then weld it up. Does not have to be perfect, just good enough to hold the bushing decent.

Be sure to check the bearing race on the end of the housing. They wear on the bottom.

You also need to take the differential bearing race out and look for signs of it spinning. If you see crude machine marks then it is probably ok. If it looks shiny then you probably have a spun race. You will have to look closer to see if it will hold a bearing properly.

I repaired several using a section from 3/4 in ungalvanized steel pipe. Real close to the correct inner diameter. mig welded it in and ground it smooth on the outside, and filed it on the inside.

On my sons, I built up one side, drilled from the other then built up the other side and drilled through it. Finished the hole with a dremel.
