Authentic trunks offered. Where???

Been researching and I can't find anyone that offers a trunk similar to the one on page 364 July Service Bulletin. Does anyone know of such a supplier????

Thanks....................

Varco trunks they are out of Oklahoma city. Most of the A's you see run this type of trunk.just type in varco trunk. Have fun modelAtony tony white Lafayette, LA

You were correct and he was not. It sounds like he knows nothing (or little) about Model A's. Based on that, be certain that his final dimension allows it to fit IN the rack as required.

It's worth noting that the original deluxe racks did not use real wood for the slats. They were woodgrain finished steel which would be silly to hide or use in a manner that would soon destroy the finish.

One of Bill's reasons, and it does have merit, is the amount of dust, dirt and rain that gets trapped along the inside of the rail and damaging the outer edges of the trunk. He said a lot of the trunks that he has restored have had a lot of water damage and corner damage.

I'm just providing facts. You are more than welcome to follow his advise and turn the platform upside down. Of course if his trunk doesn't fit properly you will need to jury rig something anyway.

It will be bolted down beside besides being strapped down. Those earlier photos you posted show the trunks on top of the those racks.

Those are different racks.

This is a fiberglass trunk (looking like a metal one) on the Deluxe Rack sold today

and....that's the exact rack I have but your trunk does not have the leather corner supports. Your trunk can sit down inside without damaging any leather corners.

If his trunks don't fit in there with the leather corners then they are being made TOO LARGE! Obviously it was a big mistake to post pics of NON-Ford racks as it simply caused unnecessary confusion.

Ok, I pulled up his pic again and understand why he made up the story on the upside down platform. Because he only makes trunks with square corners, they will NEVER fit a Model A deluxe rack neatly. Also it appears the reproduction racks have a slightly larger radius in corners of the platform than my original does which would exacerbate the problem.

Marco,
The bumper, bumper brackets, rack and trunk,...all over the counter?
This set-up is gorgeous....love that bumper..

The bumper and bumper brackets were a Ford option...It was refered to as the "Cross Bar Design" vs. the "Fender Guard Design".

See page 230 (March 1928) of the Ford Service Bulletins.

The non-ford racks pictured in Marco's photos, are from the Standard Safety Corp., L.A. Calif. They made both the trunk and the supporting rack to work together as a unit. The solid racks themselves came with slightly different mounting fitting (to body), specific to each model of the Ford.

Of course they did not just make these rack/trunks for Fords, the had a whole range of marques they catered to.

One of these Standard Safety Corp. racks/trunks was on my Nov. '27 Tudor when I bought it in 1965. When I sold the car, I kept both the rack and the trunk, later mounting it to my '28 Phaeton, where it remains today.

Prior to mounting the mounting rack to my '29 Phaeton, I had it re-plated. In the process of doing that I noticed that it was stamped (in addition to 'Standard Safety Corp. - Los Angeles) "Ford Tudor Sedan". That indicated to me that their racks that held their proprietary trunks, were made for specific models.

And like Steve Plucker mentions, it came with special bumper brackets that extended the bumpers back behind the trunk. These were not the Ford option that Steve refers to, but special brackets that came with the trunk rack from Standard Safety Corp.

I have quite a few original accessory items for the Ford Model A that were made by the Standard Safety Corp. L.A., so this trunk and rack was just one of the many after-market accessories that they made - not just for Ford, but for all the high-selling marques (read, Chevy, Dodge, etc.)
