Assembling Differential Carrier Gear Case

In an earlier thread regarding Removal of Differential Bearing Cups & Questions, I inquired about the correct way to bolt the two halves of the differential carrier gear case together on my 1930 Deluxe Coupe. In my opinion, the illustration in Vendors' Catalogs is backwards.
I have located and am attaching a picture taken from THE RESTORER, Volume 32, Issue 4, Page 26. Note that the "horseshoe crab" shaped heads of the bolt are located on the right side of the right differential gear case. As a result the bolt head is shouldered against the member of the gear case. This would mean that the castle nut and the wiring are located on the flat surface of the ring gear. This is just the opposite of detailed illustrations I have seen.
So which is the correct way??

A-MAN,

I was in error on my previous post, as Bret says, the castle nuts go to the ring gear side and the head of the bolts are locked into position on the opposite side. You were correct !!!!

I also would suggest, in view you have everything apart, install new axel housings seals and the drive shaft housing seal in the u-joint end of the drive shaft housing; this seal can be tricky to replace as you have to remove the snap ring, speedometer worm gear, spacer, bearing, and the bearing sleeve which locks in a detent in the housing; the seal is behind the sleeve.

Also, after rienstalling the rearend, remember to pump grease into the u-joint housing so the u-joint is properly greased

Also, the most important part of you rebuilding is setting the pre-load on the pinion bearing; if using a new double taper race and new bearings the pre load calls for 20 inch pounds.

Suggest you pack alot of grease on the ujoint before installation. It will save a lot of pumping unless you have an air drive pump.

Be sure the ring gear is assembled to the driver side of the axel housing; it can be assembled the opposite way; if so you will have the fastest Model A !!!!!! in reverse as you will have 3 speeds. I know it sounds funny but a friend of mine a lot of years ago did this, and probable others have also.
