Artificial (not universal) joints

I was heartened to see that so many relative youngsters are involved in the model A hobby, but there are still a lot of us oldsters, too. There must be a lot of Model A people out there with artificial knees, hips, and/or anything else that can be replaced. I'm wondering if, among those of you who have had replacements of one sort or another, there are some things you just can't do any more to work on or maintain your A or if there has been no effect on your ability (in this respect!) at all.

Guy in our club is 91 with an artificial leg he has had since he was young. We knew him for about 10 years before we found out. Still drives his car with hyd brakes, 4 speed overdive and the F1 steering box. A few of the guys in the club work on the car for him. He is a great member to have in the club.
For me my hearing is such that I cannot tell where a noise is coming from or even if something is noisey. So I depend on others there. Had a squeak in a freshly rebuilt 8ba that no one could find. An old timer told me it was the rings seating. Went away after it was broken in so he may have been right.

My wife goes in next week for a total knee replacement. I will let you know if she can work on the A after the operation. She sure as heck won't work on it now. LOL :)

As the years go by the doctor has more say in what I can or can't do !! Sanding and painting are out...even a mask is of little help. You learn to plan ahead when working on the car so you have all the tools and parts when you crawl under the car. I always seem to forget something !! They say retirement is Golden..I say it is RUST !!
In spite of it all, THe Model A Ford is the best therapy there is!!

My wife had a total knee rplmt. a little over two yrs ago & would do it again in a heartbeat. It used to be when she got in any of our Model A's she would have to get in 1st & lean over onto the drv. side because she could'nt bend her rt. leg as much. Now no problem. You need a Dr. that does at least 200 knee rplmts. a yr. & do the physical therapy afterwards.

Had my left knee totaly replaced 4 months ago works fine

told it will last 30 years- More than Me.

I can now do things I could not before the replacement

I had TKR Nov 9 still not back to speed -walking ok but still sore. Been told it can take up to a year to be back to speed. Been working on the Woody, though.

Thanks, I will pass on to my wife. The doctor that is doing hers has done hundreds and is pretty much all he does.

I did both knees 5 yr ago at age 68. One of the greatest gifts I ever got. Absolutely no problems and no pain after 3 months. The first 2 weeks are ugly, Dr said I'd be 50% at 6 wks and 100% at 12 and that is the way it worked out. DO THE THERAPY! I just did a partial hip 10 weeks ago as a result of a fall while working. It is coming along OK. Still limp a bit. Was driving after 2 weeks, using clutches after 3 or 4 weeks. Can do what I need to do now though.

If you're in good shape and do the therapy you should be fine.

Cradlescyth,
You don't know me, but if you pass first, may I have your knee? My right A.C.L. went "BOING," and the vet couldn't fix it. Now I wear a loooong brace to match the one on my other leg.:p
If you see me driving "VERMIN," out on the highways or byways, stay outa' my way.:D Bill W.

I had partial knee done 6 years ago with excellent results
I had shoulder done 5 years ago worst thing i've ever done
constant pain and limited use of it Dr retired 1 year later
only option is to cut it off at the shoulder

I had total knee replacements done one one knee about 5 years ago and the other a year after. I was religious about doing the physical therapy afterwards and had no problems whatsoever.

The only thing I can't do is ski moguls - of course I never did anyway!!
