Arbor press

I just bought a Harbor Freight shop press to separate the pinion bearing from the pinion. The press came with 2 thick plates whose function and purpose seem pretty obvious, but I need plates about 1/8" thick to fit between the bearing and the pinion gear. A quick Google search shows no such item. What am I missing?

FWIW, I find that I use my bearing separator kit for quite a lot of things, not just bearings. It's a good thing to have around the shop.

Jay, you are right. However, it's like buying a welder, you will never regret buying a bigger and better one.

Buy a good bearing separator. The studs will bend on the budget ones. My snap-on worked great until I lent it out and it never came back

I use one of these on my arbor press. It's steel plate. It originally came with a cast iron plate but it broke. The thick steel won't do that. They don't work for all applications but it is somewhat adaptable using parallel bars. I also have a whole box full of different sized sleeves and several bearing separators. Look around for cheaper ones. I know I didn't pay all that much for mine but it was a few years back.

Never loan tools - OK I've done it too. Today I'll loan someone a Harbor Freight tool but not any of my Snap-on or Mac stuff.

I always used OTC but they are under a different banner these days. Bosch owns more old companies that you can shake a stick at.

A lot of what we used to think of as solid USA are now owned, manufactured and distributed from overseas. Think Skilsaw (Chervon HK Ltd.), Delta woodworking machinery (Chang Type Industrial Company Ltd.), Schwinn bicycles (Pon Holdings)... I was quite surprised to see that OTC is owned by Bosch.

But we've hashed this time and again on this forum.

I've had great luck finding chunks of barstock on eBay. There are plenty of sellers out there that sell pre cut and custom cut chunks of metal, often with free shipping (my USPS carrier LOVES me) :D
