AOD shift problems

Have a 302 crate motor and AOD trans in my '36 Ford coupe. The shift points are strange and I can adjust the TV cable and make them worse. Currently have TV cable at the best setting so far.
1-2 shift occurs early (in about twenty feet, light throttle) then the trans stays in 2 'til about 35 MPH where it shifts hard into 3, almost immediately it shifts hard into o/d. Very unsettling!
I am suspicious that some kind of shift kit may have been installed...no info from previous owner.
I have read a lot of stuff about adjusting the TV cable to help and have it where I can at least drive the car, the shift points make it hard to enjoy however.
My other Ford has the same eng/trans and it shifts nice and smooth.
Any help appreciated!

Best place for an answer is here: www.clickclickracing.com it is an all AOD forum. One of the most popular shift kits for AOD's is this:http://www.becontrols.com/faq.htm Their shift kits have a lot of adjustability where other brands do not,Ford went to an improved valve body and internal lubrication upgrades in 1988-93 while still being non-computer an earlier AOD can be upgraded by using this later valve body,I would research the casting number on your transmission to determine what year it came from and go from there.

Thanks for the input...where are the identifying numbers on the transmission case? I should probably try to identify which trans I have in my car as a first step.

I found the casting numbers and maybe someone can help identify this transmission? RF-EOS P-7006-B D EN Thanks for looking, Buford.

Is your shift cable Lokar? If so it probably needs a helper spring to pull it all the way back. Found that to be the case on mine when checking with pressure gauge.

I found that I needed to drill the carb linkage and adjust so as soon as the accelerator moved the trans. shift cable had to move with it. This is with a Lokar cable. Worked for me. The best way to adjust it is with a pressure gauge.

Sounds like a sticking governor or valve in the valve body(possibly a broken spring inside the valve body). Put some LubeGard ATF Protectant in(red box P/N 60902). Drive the car until the transmission comes up to temperature and do a lot of going and stopping. If this doesn't help, nothing will short of removing them, disassembling and giving them a good cleaning or just replace them both. Most large cities have a vendor that specializes in used transmission parts. Call your local transmission supply house and they will refer you to one. Don't call a repair shop as they will not want to tell you about such places. Prices at these used parts shops are usually very reasonable.

As you already learned, playing with the TV cable is not going to help in this case.
