Any tricks to fitting a new distributor?

Could it be the pin on the distributor body that's a bit too big ? Just over in size enough to keep from going in.

Nope, when I test-fit the distributor body without the shaft in place, the body would seat correctly, including the locating pin.

From the marks on the new shaft it looks like it is real tight, maybe it
is a hair to big.

Sounds like the intermediate shaft diameter is a bit too large to fit into the sleeve of the dist. drive gear, file it down a bit. Maybe check the dia. with a micronimeter and compare with the dist. shaft that came out. No micrometer--try using a cresent wrench for a go-no go fit.
