Antifreeze??

Back in the 1960's when I started driving, it was a bi-annual job the replace points, plugs, condenser and rotor every fall and every spring. Then every other year would would drain, flush and refill the cooling system with fresh antifreeze and check all hoses for deterioration. A few years ago, I had my heater core plug up in my 2000 S10 Blazer because I didn't change the Dex-Cool at the recommended interval. There wasn't a problem with the antifreeze, just my absentmindedness because newer cars don't need the same bi-annual attention as my 1960's cars did. I just got too use to NOT servicing it. I don't see a problem using Dex-Cool in your Model A if it's changed a regular intervals.

Even though "Antifreeze" silicates were used in the past, just in case one may be concerned about silicates destroying "any" bearings, (babbitted Model A bearings or insert bearings in Model A's or our modern cars), Prestone makes an "Antifreeze" that is "Silicate Free" & is called Prestone Extended Life & is described by Prestone as follows:

Prestone® Extended Life Antifreeze/Coolant is compatible with ANY antifreeze/ coolant – regardless of color – for use in ALL makes and models of cars and light duty trucks. This patented formula provides a high degree of performance durability and carefully balanced protection against temperature extremes and rust corrosion of all cooling system metals, including aluminum.

Prestone also has an interesting site describing their vintage "Antifreeze" products going back to 1927 Model T days.

Ive only used antifreeze in my daily driver A,s back in the 50,s & 60,s.Since then I just use water with a cup full of soluble oil added for rust control.

Humble Opinion:

Prestone has been successfully, making "Antifreeze" for 86 years & has been protecting all types engine blocks, (w/babbitt or w/insert bearings), from freeze damage in billions of vehicles all over the World, including millions of vintage & modern tractors, farm machinery, industrial engines, all types of military vehicles, etc., etc. until today. Multiply this total number by 86 years & just think!

It appears that if one has great fear & mistrust in Prestone "Antifeeze", this would be a person who either never intends to check his oil; or perhaps one who is superstitious enough to fear walking through a graveyard at midnight on Halloween night.

Just like the Model A detergent/non-detergent oil issue, its wonderful to have freedom of choice of religion & each to his own.

I overhauled a Case farm tractor in the 80's for a customer. He had cracked heads and said he would find his own to replace them. He bought a pair of heads from out of state that had been welded. I strongly advised him not to use them on a large diesel, and I couldn't warranty any damage they might casue if they leaked. Well, the welds leaked antifreeze into the oil and the new bearings were wiped out a week later, so I had to go through the engine again.

Tom,

As you are aware, common sense is most lacking today.

Warnings "never" work with stupid -- ignoring an experienced mechanic's caution on buying un-tested, out-of-state welded heads, is similar to experiencing one trustung the slick e-bay deals that we see ocurring every day.

Then, after your "warning", he "never" checked the oil -- did he smoke (5) packs of cigarettes a day also?

Tom,

One (1) good 2013 wish is trying to tell people that in 2013, just quit wishing & worrying about having more "money", & try to concentrate on wishing for good & better "health".

With good "health" one can always make more "money" than one needs to survive; & if one is not "happy" with good health, one definitely needs an attitude adjustment to obtain "happiness".

With good "health" & "happiness", never thought about this added benefit before; but if one has good "health" & "happiness", one does have more "time".

My 2013 wish for "all" of our friends & Model A owners.

Since you brought Dex-Cool into the conversation I might add that the Law Journal article I posted was printed in 2012 and it mentioned further in the article that GM vehicles up to 2008 were effected. And you are correct in implying that Government Motors used the wrong gaskets with Dex-Cool and I also I agree, your mention of Dex-Cool does not belong on this forum as it is for modern cars and not 80+ year old Model A Fords.

With all due respect, I brought it up as a warning NOT to use it in an "A". This might also go for other long change interval coolants as well.

Therefore my mentioning of it DOES belong on this forum.

Re: Remember this stuff ?

This was made mostly of methanol. Don't think it's around anymore but it's what most people used back in the day.
