Anti freeze or not

Using anti freeze protects your radiator and block from freezing and rusting, however, i have heard that antifreeze it may also cause further leaks and could cause the head gasket to blow. Is this true? If so, what would you recommend? I live in south carolina where the temperature rarely gets to freezing and i store the vehicle in a closed garage. I rarely drive the car during the winter months.

Should i add an antifreeze solution of 50/50 to my radiator??

Thanks, dave

Same here and the 50/50 is what I do also.

Fred,

Thanks for the quick reply. Do you use a solution of 50% water and 50% anti freeze? I live in Fort Mill S.C. which is just over the border from Charlotte, N.C.

I don't use standard antifreeze. I use the coolant from Evans Cooling. It is more effective than water or standard antifreeze.

I have tried to post opinions twice (use 50:50 ethylene glycol to prevent corrosion and freezing) however this sitehas the timeout period so short that I am dumped out of the reply box before my opinion is posted.

I did the vinegar/distilled water flush then filled with 50/50 with distilled water/antifreeze.I extra flushed with the garden hose before adding the 50/50. The vinegar cost next to nothing and cleaned the block/radiator. Now with the final "good stuff" in my cooling system seems to be working great. Plus the antifreeze acts as a water pump lubricant to an extent and rust inhibitor. Just be careful on the greasing of the pump as not to over grease.

this is not what the rest of us experience. Maybe msg Ryan (bossman) to see if there is a setting somewhere that needs tweaking.
Worst case, compose your reply in a simple text program like Notepad and copy/paste it into the Barn reply box and send it right off

the challenge with any forum is to separate myth from reality.......
Like the old myth that antifreeze will "create" leaks, because it will leak where water WON'T---PSHAW!
Antifreeze leaks will leave its "calling card" in the form of a green or blue stain from its pigments. Water will evaporate, leaving NO "telltale" signs.
Antifreeze formulations have been improved considerably, over many years, & there's some GREAT products on the market.

Like oil, you are going to get as many opinions as there are owners. All with the greatest intentions. The fact is they ALL work. Pick the one you like the best.

I found where antifreeze leaks is where I have a leak already. It does me the favor of showing me where they are so I can fix.
