Another Transmission ID :-)

Hi All,

I don't know what the difference is between a multiplate clutch trans, and the single plate.

I'd quite like to buy a spare trans for our 29 Tudor.

Can anyone say if this is multi or single?

It's advertised an an AR trans...

I've hunted around, but the differences elude/confuse me - It's a RHD of course, too ;)

Need to see inside the front of the bellhousing but, that is a right hand drive transmission, no matter what the clutch.

The small inspection door on the bellhousing indicates it's a multi-disk clutch. Is it for sale in New Zealand or the US, because I would very much like to buy the U-Joint housing halves off of this transmission.

I can post some pictures tonight of the different clutches and flywheels, but this one is an early one with the multi-disk clutch.

Oh, and somebody put the pedals on the wrong side! :D

If you need the early U joint housings, I have a few, plus other related 28 stuff PM me if interested

I completely missed that.

Multi disc it is as the bell housing is not the same & easy to tell by the angle inspection plate, course front view would confirm . Have plenty of the U joint housings here if wanted.

Thanks guys. There were a few variations of the early U-joint housings that had the ears for the brake cross shafts, but the one in the OP's photo looks to be the earliest version. I wish I had a good photo showing the different variants, but I don't. The telltale sign will be that the bottom half looks exactly like the upper half, only with the "hook" (that goes up over the lip of the crossmember) cut off, and that "hook" will have a "T" shaped cross section.

Sorry for the thread hijack, Mr. Allanw!

Thanks for ALL the replies!

OK! Deffo don't mind the hijack (it's practically my middle name!)

Pictures of the differences would be awesome, if you can.

So this has a "small inspection cover"??? I'll have to look at ours to see the difference. I've assumed so far, that we have a single plate clutch. What is the actual difference I'm looking for? What is the difference with the angle?

I've tried searching, but I think I'm missing the difference - It'd be good to know for next time I find one :-)

I beleive the issues are, that the mutliplate clutches use a different input shaft and possibly bearings - correct? So to rebuild this one would mean extra work and parts - I might just rebuild our original during next "winter" - this one is no reserve at NZ$200 (US$160 ish) and is close to home (in NZ), so thought it might be worth grabbing...

Thanks - Got that wheel bearing the other day too - just have to fit it now! We have a new harbour bridge opening here on the 28th July, and we're in the Parade... probably best to keep the wheels turning

Yes, you are correct about the multiple being different. It uses NO pilot bearing, but the clutch discs are centered by the flywheel.

The early multiplate bell housing WON'T work with the single disc clutch. The input shaft is different on the early transmission but there is more. The multi plate clutch uses a much different flywheel. The single disc flywheel won't clear the early bell housing.

It,s a 28 multi disc trans,The clutch hsg, trans hsg & input shaft & rear clam shells are different than the later models. The internals are the same except for the input shaft.
