Another question on temp sending bulb...

Didn't want to hijack Mike B's thread, so I'm wondering if these things normally stick or break in the head?

I have an intact one I want to remove from an old engine and use in my 8BA.

Also, it came up in Mike's thread that the 8BA has a fully tapped hole - will the bulb from an older engine work? Sounds like the older head had a "lip".

Thanks, Gordon

8BA's are NPT threads. From what I saw in the other thread, the older ones must be machine thread with a seat.

I've never had one stick in a head. The hose connections tho are very hard to get loose, to the point I don't mess with them.

I used an adapter to install one in my 8BA in the 36.
It means the bulb is not into the head as far but compares
pretty well with the electric unit in the other head,

Thanks all,

Guess I'll have to make an adapter of some sort. Ross, sorry to hear about the hose connection. My 8BA doesn't have any kind of heater valve so was planning on taking one out. Maybe I'll study Old Henry's set up and do that.

Wondering - how did you read the signal from the other side - is it just resistance?

I always install the bulb with copious amounts of anti-sieze, and do not over tighten- just nip down the thread sufficient to seat the bulb. Makes subsequent removal much easier.

The NPT to 5/8 UNF adaptor is quite common, most gauge sets have them. The Sunpro set I bought had the correct adaptor. You should be able to pick one up on ebay or most places.

Mart.

Good info Mart, (especially for me), I had used a SunPro gauge a few months ago on a tractor, and have all the adapters stashed away.

Thanks all for info and suggestions. It's nice to learn some of this stuff ahead of time.

I hate it when I go out to the garage, pull down a wrench to "just" change a temperature sensor, and I'm there for hours or in the house ordering pieces.
