Having finally got my reinstalled engine back from the shop (see previous post) I am putting some miles on it and have noticed that under load it sounds like a tractor . A leaking exhaust flange was suspected and a close inspection reveals the following .

Obviously If your exhaust manifold is broken right through the bottom you just stick a pipe up the centre and pack it with exhaust cement. How that was ever going to seal I don't know.

Although it is not a recent 'repair" one would have thought a shop that works on the engine for 23 hours including removing and installing the manifold twice would have least drawn it to my attention !!!!

In defence of the shop, they might have thought that you did that, and did not want to seem as if they were criticizing you. ?????????????

Karl,
I followed your other post. A number of questions come to mind and comments.
Did the 'repair' shop employ one/more persons to do your work(one person= $56 an hour per person, whereas 2 people= $23 per person, etc)? And, does that shop regularly repair model As , or yours only?
In my opinion, you should be concerned more about whomever 'repaired/rebuilt' your engine! How the heck is a 'rebuilt' engine have a hole thru it leaking water..without rebuilder noticing?? And, is/was this hole thru the water jacket? If so what shape is the rest of the block it??
Finally, you can surely see now that one half of the involved hours was/could be attributed to the (rebuilder)hole! What did the 'rebuilder' tell you about that and his work? Had the 'mechanic' been told of the broken manifold....more hours r&r!! And, why did the 'rebuilder' put a broken manifold back onto a 'rebuilt' engine?? Gives new meaning to the ole saying...if you want something done right....Good luck. lol

Is that some of that famous kiwi 8g fencing wire engineering and repairs we keep hearing about in Australia.
Seriously, the workshop has failed in duty of care in my opinion. To either miss the broken manifold or to not inform you is bad buisness, as nothing was holding the front of the exhaust system up.

The rebuilder rebuilt the engine all ancillaries including the Manifold where put on by the shop - I suspect the manifold was well hidden by gasket cement and the multiple removal and replacement weakened it. Certainly it has been functioning fine on the car for the last 18 months since I brought it.

The rebuilder is very good The rust hole was very small and in the one place where you wouldn't see it easily. I inspected the block closely and missed it myself both before and after recon. I would and will use him again without hesitation.
