An overheating question-the 3rd update 10/2/13

Re: An overheating question-a second minor update

I think my Tudor has reached that point. I planned to drain and flush today. What do you suggest for an "ionic detergent"?

SDS (Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate). Other ionics will work as well. You need to wade through the fine-print on cleaning products to find something not based on "nonionic surfactants" that will not foam. Your primary goal is not degreasing, it is encapsulating the stuff in micelles which you can flush out.

Re: An overheating question-a second minor update

I don't think I have a chance of finding that stuff! Any alternatives?

10/2/13 Update: I magnafluxed the block on my coupe today and found no cracks, so that's a relief. The head went out for hot tanking, magnafluxing, and decking also, and that should be back Friday. I'm going to put the engine back together and put something in the cooling system to degrease it, then maybe evapo-rust or vinegar to take care of the rust, and then we'll see what next.

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions so far.

700 RPM, You may notice that after you run the vinegar in YOUR engine about 2 weeks and flush it , you may want to run about 1 cup of liquid cascade in the radiator for another 4, 5 days this will also get your radiator sparkling CLEAN. HAVE FUN modelAtony tony white Lafayette, LA

Re: An overheating question-the FINAL update 10/14/13

I retrieved the head on 10/3, hot tanked, decked and magnafluxed (it was good). Painted the head and put it back on, torqued it four times, ran a cleaning solution through it till the water was clear, then ran 3 gallons of vinegar in it. Today I drained out the vinegar that has been in there since 10/3 (about 100 miles) and flushed it again till the water ran clear. Put one gallon of denatured alcohol in, along with some rust inhibitor and two gallons of fresh water, and took it out this afternoon to see if I could make it overheat under standard driving conditions and correct timing. I'm glad to say it maintained a cool temperature with no boiling or apparent signs of overheating. Tomorrow I will take it on a good hill climb and see how it does, but I'm quite hopeful I've got it solved. :)
