amp clamp for generator output

Can I use a modern digital amp to read amp output of my generator? Will it bounce all over like a digital volt meter does on my 40 6 volt? I will buy a new amp clamp meter if it will work.
Thanks

On my model a I had to have the meter inside the car.
On the model T the meter literally cried and Wouldn’t stop until the batteries were removed

If you buy a clamp on make sure it will work on DC some are AC only. I suspect it will cause the digital meter to bounce. You can use an analog meter with the clamp on.

I was using a clamp on attachment for my meter, the ignition interference gets the digital meters upset when it is in the engine compartment.
I was using a Snapon Vantage with a compatible amp probe.
Haven’t tried the cheap Harbot freight all in one clamp on yet
