Amount of coolant

I drained the radiator and engine of coolant. pulled the thermostat and flushed the system. I think the system takes 15 quarts of coolant ??

i have no heater hoses installed.
I filled the system and ran until hot and I added coolant as it circulated
until full.

The problem - I could only get in 10 quarts of coolant?
Is it possible for the hoses and heater to take 5 quarts?
Sounds like a lot?
Opinions?

The coolant system capacity should be listed in the applicable year/model Shop or Service manual.

If you have an owners manual, it should be in there. Year make and engine would give us some more to go on.

Did you remove or open up the side of the block drains ? If not, you still would have old coolant in the block.

Troutmalt, this is a great series of threads on a very interesting car/restoration. But it’s in pieces and hard for us to remember the whole story. I’m going to sum up what I think I’ve read, edit it as necessary for errors or bad assumptions.

1968 Italia Intermeccanica, built in Turin Italy

1968 Ford export engine, industrial, exact tuning specs unknown (as opposed to 1968 Mustang 302 automobile production unit)

Engine running.

Car not drivable (or driven) due to other restoration items in progress.

Restoration to original preferred.

That kind of sum up the very basics?

You might add “ Italia Intermeccanica” to your signature line to remind us old guys.

Great project

Hey Mike, thanks for your interest.
I have all sorts of problems so I will keep you guys busy.
I think i have found the solution to the missing coolant.

When I "Googled" this someone opined:
"When you drain the block via the loose lower hose, it does not drain
the coolant in the block below the water pump."

Between that and ho heater or hoses could be my missing 5 quarts.

The guy that wrote this said he found this out the hard way. He “drained” the engine before pulling it.
On the stand he discovered the engine still had enough coolant in the block to flood the garage floor.

Could you confirm this?

And you need to drain both sides of the block! If a stock block still there will be a 1/4 pipe plug on each side and if original will have a 3/8 hex head for a wench or socket. They could of been replaced with petcocks, or 1/4 allen wench plugs. Find them to drain the block.
