Is it nornal when you turn the key on for the ammeter to go to discharge right way by just turning the key on. Haven't started the car, haven't turned on lights or horn or anything. wasn't sure if just turning the key there would be any draw or if the needle should say 0 until you turn something on like starting the car or lights then go to discharge. Thanks

Yes, but it depends on how much. Should only be a few amps. Ammeter will not be affected by using the starter which is not in the ammeter circuit.

If the points are closed you will see a draw from the primary coil circuit, but if the points are open, no draw should be seen.

What midgetracer said is true for Model A's after November, 1929 (see SERVICE BULLETINS pg. 390). Before this date the amp meter wasn't in the ignition circuit.

I and many others like to have the amp meter in the ignition circuit to make checking points and current flow through the coil easier. To make the change, simply move the coil feed wire from the battery side of the amp meter to the other side of the amp meter. You do this by moving the coil feed wire from one terminal box post to the other terminal box post.

Model A's made after November 1929 have this change in the wiring, so no change is needed.
