Ammeter Mounting:

Are the the 4 little tabs on the sides of the ammeter used to mount it in the dash panel? If so, how do you hold it in place when the tabs are broken? If not, how do you hold it in place?
Thanks,
Jon

See if you can use some rubber band type material once set in the panel,or find a proper diameter rubber washer to put around once in the dash panel.

I used silicone caulk. Put a puddle of it in 3 spots evenly spaced around the gauge. Holds real good and can be removed quite easy.

I have to admit, the silicone idea interests me.
I was going to say buy a new ammeter so its installed correctly. If you don't like the cheap new meter simply replace its innards with your original one so you have an original meter in a new housing.

But the silicone idea seems like a really good one.

I used hot glue on my daughters car to hold her temperature controls in the dash
with the hot california weather it melted and glued the whole thing together
it made a mess

I also open the ammeter and put a drop of 3-In-1 oil on the needle shaft pointy ends so the meter gives good readings and doesn't stick. Also I tighten the slotted nuts that secure the posts in the meter. For a tool to do this, use a cut off disc and make a vertical slot in an old screwdriver. To make sure the insulators are O.K. inside the meter, use an ohmeter to make sure their is no conductivity from each post to the ammeter case. If using a higher output alternator with a 20 amp meter, and the meter is pegged at times, it WILL NOT burn out the meter, as the current is all passing through the bus bar, and the needle is operating purely by induction. Overheating ampmeters is caused only by bad insulators inside meter or loose slotted nuts that secure posts to ammeter case. Restorer magazine, some time ago had a great article on how to correct the innards of the original ammeters. Trust me on this. I don't know everything, but I do know this for a fact.:D-Bill W.

Silicone works like a champ, I did a bath remodel about 2 years ago, they had a pedestal sink on ceramic tile. They set the pedistal in silicone, I had a devil of a time getting it off the tile. Just to see how well it was stuck I kicked the top of the pedestal and it pulled the face off the tile. In a perfect horseshoe to match the bottom of the pedestal half way into the tile.

Rollingsculpture is close. The guts are good. The tabs on the bezel are broken. i would like to keep it all because it is original. The bezel is nickel and matches the nickel of the dash panel where repos don't. All your suggestions are good.

I could just buy a new bezel.

Thanks,
Jon
