Ammeter ignition reading

My last Model A, some years back, would register the coil load on the ammeter, if, of course, the engine was stopped with the points closed. My "new" car doesn't seem to be wired that way and I kinda miss that. I have looked at the wiring diagrams and can't figure out which way is "correct". I think I would like to rewire to show the coil load.

Continuing to work the rear hub issue and have ordered a boatload of parts.....serious stink eye from the house boss (guess I won't use her VISA card the next time).

Remove the cover of the junction box and find the coil wire, move it to the other junction box terminal. You should see the coil current with the points closed, motor stopped and ignition switch turned on. If you have a 20 0 20 ammeter.

Here's a diagram that might help. It's from the earliest A years, which is how your's is apparently wired. Not too long after production started, Ford recommended the change that Herb described--so, both ways are correct, sort of.

If you've got original-colored wiring, it's the black wire coming off of the coil that must be switched to the other junction box terminal. Makes no difference whether 20 or 30 amp ammeter.

The other wire (red) from the coil also goes into the big hole in the terminal box, but rather than hooking up to one of the terminals, goes on to the ignition key switch.

Here is the drawing of the later version. Notice the difference when you trace the wiring from the points to the battery.
