Ammeter doesn't show positive charge

I had problems with Generator and fixed those. My ammeter was not showing a charge so I got a new one. Check all of the wiring and still no charge. Generator putting out 6.9-7,3 volts. 6.3 volts at switch, ammeter but no positive charge when lights turned on will show discharge, but will not go positive of zero.
Any suggestions or solutions welcomed.

If you have had the generator off of battery connection for more than a day, or replaced the generator or battery, open the left hood side, take some type of jumper wire and quickly jump across the cutout terminals then see if it work.

Not unusual to show no or less charge with lights on. I corrected this with a Fun Projects voltage regular and cranked the third brush up to show a slight charge with lights on and full battery charge. Other add on regulators are available but this one replicates the cutoff externally.

Polarize/flash the generator. Start it and take a jumper wire and jump across the cutout terminals for a nano-second. Adjust the third brush to the output you want. 2-4 amps for normal day driving. 7-9 amps for a lot of night driving. I don't like to see these putting out much more than 10 amps.

First thing to do is polarize it as mentioned. Just jump the input and output terminals of the cutout for one second, then see if you get a + reading.

If still no charge, then with the engine running at fast idle, use a clip lead to jump the input and output terminals of the cutout and see if it now shows a charge. If it does, then the cutout needs to have the contacts cleaned or it may need to be replaced. If it's an original cutout, then the cover is fastened by two spot welds, but I break these by using a sharp chisel. I've found the pull-in winding wire broken where it's connected to ground, and this is an easy fix by soldering the broken wire.

If it's a repro cutout, then most of them aren't worth fixing.

If it shows charge with the lights off --(how much )it's charging
With the lights on the (with a stock system) the owners instruction book says the ammeter WILL show a discharge (also at idle)

perhaps the charge rate has to be adjusted
