Ammeter bounces sporadically on KiWi36

I had Mrs Bishop(kiwi 36 rhd) All stock , out yesterday & the ammeter would run at about 9 amps & then go wild bouncing up & down sporadically , it would do this all day long drove her about 60 miles total.
Any ideas ? Geny near new rebuild = 3 brush with solid state type stock looking cutout
