american pickers

My teeth grind when I hear how much they either sell or value their "Finds" at, at the end of the show. My self, I'm very quiet about that. Nothing good can come from that! You either look foolish or greedy. Foolish for spending too much or greedy for beating the seller down too much. I have a principle of rarely ever releasing that info to anyone.

It's just a SHOW. Chill out....sounds like good gig to me....I would do it in a minute.

Nothing is real on TV...cmon...check out network news...what a joke...but entertaining.

I read somewhere, maybe on here, that Mike made the pilot and a few shows. He went to several "networks" and no one wanted it. They thought it would not draw an audience. History took a flyer on the show and the rest, as they say, is history. I believe the show re-invigorated interest in old stuff/collectables. If this is true I wish Mike and Frank all the best-they took a chance, put their money on the line and made a success of their venture. One other thing, it is not as bad as Orange County Chopper was from the beginning.

I stumbled upon those early Youtube videos years ago before the show came out, that was the reason I started watching in the first place when it began to air.

These are the "pilots" that were shot and then shopped around to the networks.

didn't realize Mike and Frank put "money on the line"....

pretty much looks as if they invested nothing-BTW Frank is a tightwad! LOL!
(these guys always offer almost nothing and it is most always accepted with reluctance,
by some kind hearted seller who is so old in years, that he feels hoodwinked!)

anybody on this site could do what these guys do any day of the week, even wo experience. A no talent show......... my opinion.

one member has commented that he asked about KRW tools, but I wonder how many members have inquired about Model "A" parts....probably no one will admit it if they did LOL.

BTW I did not make any such inquiry to them.

Those shows from YOUTUBE were, probably, honest.
They were from the days, before they had writers and a full team. I felt better about watching them.
Too bad that they got so big and structured.

I don't begrudge, Frank and Mike, the American Pickers anything. They came up with the idea. It took off. More power to them. Isn't that part of the "American Dream"?

The American Pickers, Pawn Stars, etc. are scripted and it bugs me but I try to look beyond that. I enjoy seeing things and learning about things that I normally wouldn't see.

The advance crew, secrecy, security, etc. is all part of the operations of a show. A buddy of mine had the Pickers come to his place. Secrecy was part of the initial agreement. They came. They bought...a lot more than what they showed on television. Without secrecy can you imagine what it might be like when attempting to film an episode.

For the most part I enjoy the fact that the Pickers like the patina and aged look of items. I do cringe at what the Pawn Stars, Counts Cars and American Restoration do to some pretty nice original items.

Overall I enjoy the shows knowing that they are shows. American Pickers attempts to show what it was like to pick before they became the American Pickers on TV. It's neat to see what Frank and Mike (or really their crews) find in some old barns. I know for myself that I cannot help to wonder what is inside old barns when I drive by them.

We can all feel a little better watching the episode where Frank buys the yellow '31 ('29) "roadster" (coupe) and goes on to explain that the '31 was the deluxe model because it has the two taillights and "a little bit bigger engine" and is "a little more desirable."

Fun to watch, and they may know motorcycles, but they are definitely not "A"/car experts...
