Am I the only one?

It seems I spend half my time putting the tools away. They're all over the floor and the dirt is all over me by the time I get something done.
Even a simple task like pulling a cotter pin turns out to be a big deal requiring every tool I have in the box just to get the rusted, frozen, broken thing out. Pliers. dikes, punches, hammer, drill, liquid wrench, wrench, socket and ratchet, torch, screwdrivers, drop light, scribe awl---the list goes on and on. I'm developing a real fondness for my dirty old rug that keeps my back warm laying under the beast.
At the end of the day I ache all over. I know I must be wierd, but I love it.

The only difference I can report is that I do not love it anymore. All the tool comments, and dirt, and aches apply.

I have little piles from the last jobS. I put them away when there's not much left in the tool box. G.M.

I agree with it all except Love is too strong a word for me. I do get great satisfaction from knowing that I did it...that I fixed it myself. But I would rather be driving the beast.

You said you spend half your time putting tools away. Assuming you're spending the other half taking tools out, all is right with the world.

I recognize the symptoms! Still better than the pain in the neck caused by looking at a hand held device all day.

I am a very untidy worker. From to time I will have a big tidy up and re-org. Like you, Bolts, I do leave little piles of tools all round the place. When I can't find a certain wrench I'll look through the piles until I find it.

Mart.

When I work on stuff all day, sometimes I am just too tired to put all the tools away. Not every time but some times. After some rest, I come back to the garage in the morning and square away the bays and benches.

I lost my impact wrench after having used it three or four days previously. Looked through all the drawers in the toolbox, on the bench, under the car, by the air compressor, anywhere it might be laying around then back through the toolbox again, repeated the whole deal again. No impact wrench. Why is it, the last place you look? Lifted the trunk lid-viola!
I knew better, but-- might have been better to leave it in a pile.

YEP......Me too.

My story is that I need a particular tool to do a job. I know that I have the tool. I remember having bought it, so I go to get it. Search high and low all over looking for it to no avail. Break down and buy a new one. Use the new tool to do the job and then, when I put it away, guess where the old one turns up? Right where I go to put the new one!

i would literally hate for ANYONE to see my garage! talk about trying to dump 10 gallons of crap into a 1 gallon bucket!!

I don't mind doing the work, takes me longer as I get older. The mind works faster than the body. My biggest complaint is cleaning up and putting things away. My garage also eats sockets. I'm missing 3 right now and they'll surface after I replace them. If you saw my garage, you"d agree that I'm a bona fide slob!

I spend more time looking for tools than I do using them. Now on Sunday's I put everything back to where it should be just to get a good start on Monday

I learned most of my machining stuff from a guy who was a submarine machinist in WW2, he tended to keep his shop picked up rather well.

And though my project stuff tends to cover every possible surface- to the extent that I open a drawer to have a space to put something down- The tools themselves go back in drawers at the close of each project...

I am fortunate enough to have peons to do the dirty work. All I have to do is hand them tools and put them away. Good perk of this is, I always know where the tools are.

Because I am so forgetful, I have to clean and return all tools to their place after each task and the end of the day if the task carries over. I hate looking for tools when I am in the middle of a project. Also, like Bolts, I seem to use half the tool inventory for the smallest chores sometimes and it gets so cluttered I can't move!
