Aluminum trans inspection cover

They are steel from the early 1909 through 1927. Many different kinds.

Only the first 2500 cars had the aluminum access door with the single hex bolt in the middle to open the locking mechanism.

Here is the earliest type of door as seen on S/N 904:

Original Ford part from '09 through late '15 or in that neighborhood.

There are aftermarket/accessory aluminum transmission inspection covers, some have provisions for outside oilers. The vendors currently sell a finned aluminum reproduction cover too.

Seems like it would be impossble to change the bands through that early, small cover. I imagine it was there for band adjustment only, and changing the bands meant taking the whole hogshead off.

The bands with removable ears were not installed by Ford until about 1925. So there was no way to change any of them up through 1924 model year without removing the whole hogshead first.

Royce is correct, but the operative word in his comment is was. Now you can change the bands in earlier model years without removing the hogshead if you use the ones with removable ears. Admittedly I've only done it once, but having suffered the experience of learning how not to do it I'll do it again.

Ah- when I relined the bands on my '15 two winters ago, I took the hogshead off because I was doing other maintenance on the hogshead. I have the bands without the removable ears. They were a little clumsy to remove with the hogshead off, and I never put 2+2 together and realized they'd be impossible to remove through just the access cover.
