aluminum case top loader 4 speed transmission

In looking for the right transmission for my Hot Rod build, A good friend offered me a transmission he had in his pile. He said he has a Ford 4 speed top loader with an aluminum case out of an early 80s Mustang. Told me to make a fair offer, I haven't got a clue of the value? WHAT'S fair? Thanks, Jim

look in the trans-no broken gears-good and clean around here (SC) $250-300 with a shifter. My buddy has one behind his 8RT flattie in his t-bucket and loves it. Just looked at the same in a cast iron case and 3 sp-can buy it with shifter for $100

check where the shifter mounts, could be on the tail housing? I have one form a truck shifter on top like '39 later style may be better, mine is in a 48 car made shifter longer looks like a''39 " Laurie

Where is the shifter? If it is on top, it sounds like the 3 speed OD that they used in F150's. Don't forget that you need an adapter. I would check Flathead Jacks for that. Don't mess with the stacked Offy stuff.

You may not need an adapter. Ford top loaders did not have the same pattern as the early (49-60's) cars, at least on the top two bolts. Lower holes were the same as the 49-60's.

The first regular 4 speed top loaders (Non o/d) has the early pattern, then went to a four hole configuration on the top and then back to a two hole configuration with just the wider bolt pattern. These usually could be drilled for the old pattern.

Don't know what pattern the o/d ones had. Probably the latest pattern, but you would have to examine one. One problem is that there is a wide gap ratio wise between second and third (I believe) that may mot work good with a flathead..

I've had one in my 39 for many years and really like it. Most of the trannies have both patterns, although some only have the wide pattern.
