Alternator Recommendation

I have one I took off my car that I would sell you. Previous owner bought it from one of the part supply houses. It's probably got less than 500 miles of use. I went back to a generator and I don't need it. Please send me a PM if interested & we can discuss price.

ASk any supplier for the one wire GM alternator. Works fine for me. I too love it when the parts guy asks for the application, whether generator, sparkplugs, nuts and bolts, wire, anything, and love the reaction when I tell them 1930 Model A Ford. They always say they dont have it.

I have a 12V system. I want to put a "one wire" alternator on the car. Sixty five amps will more than cover the electrical needs. Can anyone recommend an alternator model that requires only one wire? Also, when I go to buy something at the auto parts store, the first thing they ask is what year and model car does it go on.

Thanks for any help.

Just curious, since you state that you have a 12 volt system, what alternator or generator do you have on there right now?

Brent,

I have a modified alternator of unknown brand. We had to replace the original in a hurry last summer. This one is getting a bit flaky. I am wanting to replace it before failure. Failure during a GreatRace event will take us out of competition.

What you need is an original generator with an EVR. The original generator on my car is going on 83 years and still going strong.;)

I agree with Tom.

I too am a fan of the original reliable generator, going on 40 years untouched after a 16 yeart old rebuilt it, and many years of to many amp output (18A), I now run a lower output because of the Halogen headlight bulbs(15A), and have brighter lights.

If you are worried about charging system failure stopping you run a magneto

The belt tension to properly turn an alternator stresses the other parts of the belt drive system.

The more modifications the less of the original "A" reliability you have.

Email me at jrelliott42@gmai.com, have the information in a chart that gives you the GM altenator style the part number for the single wire conversion kit or alternatively use three wires and get the altenator charging immediately. The later method works better and does not require any mod to the altenator, so if the altenator goes bad can go to a parts store and get a replacement and only change the pulley.

My alternator recommendation is to leave them on the shelf for use on modern cars.:D

The good old generator looks right, fits right, and works right, plus no parasitic battery drain.

The jury is still out on how long the generator will last though. Mine is only 83 years old.

It seems the small family owned parts stores are almost gone
Had 1 nearby about 10 yrs ago who stocked model a pt sets. Had a full machine shop in the back. Certainly miss it

I have bought three one wire type. Latest from Bratton's and the first two from Mike's.

Just bolt them on and connect one wire. If you are unsure call and ask questions from the folks at Bratton's or Mike's. They are both great and will help you. Mike's has Saturday hours until noon.

I have not had any problems and alternators sure make life simpler.

I got mine from NAPA auto parts. part # 67127 and I changed the pulley to the small ones the model a vendors sell and then also bought the mount brackets from the model a parts vendor.
