Alternator Recommendation

I have a 12V system. I want to put a "one wire" alternator on the car. Sixty five amps will more than cover the electrical needs. Can anyone recommend an alternator model that requires only one wire? Also, when I go to buy something at the auto parts store, the first thing they ask is what year and model car does it go on.

Thanks for any help.

You are not just going to pick up a one wire alternator at a parts store. They are about 73 and up GM (Delco's)that have had the regulators changed to a one wire type.Any automotive electrical shop can change it over in a matter of minutes.I buy the regulators from a local shop for around $18.and change them over myself.I don't use them on the A's,but I have put dozens of them on tractors, loaders, dozers, compressors, skid steers, backhoes, etc. There will be a slight drain when parked, but if you use it once a week you will never notice it.Some of the one wire regulators have a terminal that you can switch to stop that, but the regulators I buy do not.Or,you can just buy one from a vendor already done.

Email me privately as I know of a guy that sell at IOLA that sells them cheaper than ANY of the usual A suppliers.

I go to my local Alternator/Starter repair and rebuild shop and ask for a GM one wire. He builds (actually keep one or more on the shelf) the 65 amp style. I have one of these on all my a's. Oooh - they are all 12 v.

:D My local rebuild shop sells them for $55.

I just bought a 12volt alternator for my Bobcat skid steer. It was $45.00 with a lifetime guarantee. Bought it at O Riley's. They had cheaper one's with six month guarantee. I use to pay about $90.00 for one in the old days.

I found that it pays to shop around. I use to shop at one or two places for car parts. I always thought they were giving me a discount price. I can go to some of the large franchise stores and get a better prices than from stores that I thought were my friends for years. The clerks do not know me and I do not know them but they give me a good price and they could care less if I ever return.

Keith, I hate to say you are wrong but, they are available at any local auto parts around here. One wire Delco Remy ready to install and run. I get mine from a regional supplier that I located through my local parts dealer.

James,It may be a local thing. We don't have any real parts stores here anymore.Arts Auto parts (small local store)used to have these made up and stocked them for all of us farmers, tractor and equipment mechanics. Now,if it is not for a specific application, and in the computer,it is not on the shelf. Some guys buy a rebuilt for an 81 Olds diesel, and then install the $18.regulator.Years ago Napa was considered the cheapo parts store here, now it is one of the best.It is not that they have gotten better, the good store have closed up.I have gotten some real junk from Auto Zone and Pep Boys.Advance seems to have more brand names but they are new in my area so the jury is still out on them.
