Alternator and Fan

I have a 52 Ford v8 and I'm putting in a new alternator with a new bracket and was wondering if there is a trick to getting the fan and the alternator tight, so the belts aren't loose. I am leaning over the radiator and trying to pull both things up but can't make any progress. I have a long heavy-duty screwdriver trying to pry underneath but that's not working either. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Tom

I've only done the 8RT with the wide belts.
Start with the generator. You need to get a pry bar in from the side, as far forward as you can. You may need a block of wood as well.
Once you have the generator set and tight you can use a light ratchet strap or some rope and a pry bar to adjust the fan. With the fan you need to be lifting close to the engine block.

I have a couple of wedge-shaped pieces of wood I drive underneath the generators and then tighten them up. I don't know how that would work on your alternator. Don't make the belt super tight or you'll wipe out the bearingsor bushings. The belt should have a "little bit" of play in it. Be really careful prying under a generator or alternator, it easy to break stuff. Maybe get someone to lift it up while you tighten it. Remember it does have to be super tight. Use the "correct" width belt for the pulleys you are using. The belts ride on the "V" sides of the pulleys not on the bottom of the groove.

69a and Flathead Fever thanks for the ideas. This is a 239 v8 and the alternator looks like a generator.

I know according to the instructions the belt on the alternator has to be tight. Does the fan have to be really tight or can it have a little slack like the model A.
