All new wiring...from who?

I've dealt with Tyree on several cars and can say he has never done me wrong. He has even helped me out with some modifications that needed extra wiring. Always willing to help out and find his wiring top notch.

I believe that instead of some cute retort referencing some dysfunctional guy's nether parts, I'd be more inclined to ask David(G) what inherent problems he found with Tyree's products, as well as his comments on the advantages associated with Rhode Island Wiring's products, especially since he seemed pretty adamant about his assertions. I think that David's knowledge and experience have essentially proven his astute judgement when it comes to recognizing quality pieces.

Who said anything about a dysfunctional guy's nether regions? Whatcha be a smokin' thar feller?

I'll agree, Dave is extremely knowledgeable about these old Fords, and he does absolutely beautiful work in restoring them. I visited his shop once with Roy Nacewicz and Jerry Grayson. WOW. I wish I had his knowledge and skills, as well as his experience.

I felt no inclination to cross examine him on his opinions nor to ask him to elucidate on them.

Tyree Harris, HANDS DOWN.

How may wiring looms have your purchased from him and for what cars? I am asking as I need to purchase multiple new wiring kits for 32, 39, 40 cars and I would like to hear from people who have done actual business with a supplier and what the good and bad is.

thank you

No matter who you buy from, the more you know about what you need, the better they can serve you. Do your research and specify your exact needs, and get confirmation that your instructions are understood.

When I was young and dumb, I wanted to rebuild a 94 carb, so I called Bob Drake and ordered a set of main jets. The order taker asked me what size I wanted, and I didn't know the answer. i learned a cheap but important lesson when they sent me two .046 jets for my single carb, because the guy told me that's what Hot Rodders use. That was my second important lesson, not to believe anything told you by a clerk.

So ask questions and check the answers you get before you lay your money down. For a harness, you should know if you need an early or late of the year of your car, do you have a radio, how about your generator, 2 or 3 brush? Do you want Concourse correct, do you want turn signal wires, fog light wires, a heavy gauge to serve an up-front relay for your headlights, do you want bullet connectors, soldered connections or crimped, the type of spark plug connectors you want, perhaps a third brake light wire? Most of these questions you'll know off the top of your head, some just a decision to be made, but don't rely on a clerk's advice.

I purchased a complete set of wires and harnesses for my truck restoration from Tyree and had excellent service and the wires are perfect. There are two reasons I am satisfied. First, I have all of the Ford archives drawings for my wire harnesses and I verified they were correct BEFORE I ordered anything. I was armed with correct wire sizes, colors, loom colors, etc. For most of the common harnesses, like the headlights and instruments, it was easy to pick out a correct harness. For my truck specific harnesses, like the rear tail light, I worked with Tyree to make sure each harness was correctly manufactured according to my (Ford) specifications. These turned out perfectly with the right wire colors, lengths and importantly for me, the correct loom color trace (red thread). I used the same process for unique harnesses like the optional rear right-hand tail light cross-over harness, something that most people have no idea about. As others have mentioned, if you aren't able to be very specific to what you want and what will make you happy, the chance of being disappointed is high. If you leave decisions to someone making your wires in the dark, it's no wonder that there will be problems. Also, I had the experience of finding out that the harness everyone thinks is the correct one, is actually not so. I had to insist on having wires made my way, not some universal fit which never fits right.
Sorry for the long tale. I only have ordered one harness from Tyree and there are others who will make harnesses just as well. I'm lucky to live abouta 2 hour drive from Tyree, so I was able to visit his shop and take time to explain what I wanted in person, something not everyone can do and a far cry from ordering through a keyboard. I found Tyree to be very flexible with my very specific and demanding order. One harness didn't meet my expectations and he took it back and exchanged it for one I was satisfied with - no charge.
I respect DavidG completely, and bow to his expertise. knowledge and advice. I'm sure his experience is valid, I'm just adding my experience and circumstances to the discussion. If you want a custom harness, I suggest that you provide a complete drawing of any harness with all of the material specification, lengths, fasteners, etc. so the builder can make what you want the first time.

The suppliers referenced here seem to all have supporters and detractors. Best to do your own do diligence and then make your own decision. After that order one harness and see how YOU like it before committing to multiple purchases.

In a previous post I recommended YnZ wiring BUT I have never purchased a complete harness from them. I have however purchased sockets and loom material. I've known the owner for over 40 years. He is a car guy that has an immaculate OT Jag that he resurrected from a total wreck. My suggestion is that when you're checking out suppliers include YnZ. IMO it will be worth it. But be prepared for a bit of a wait. And don't expect generic one size fits all pricing. Good luck with your search.

I ordered a complete harness for my 45 truck from Tyree and it worked beautifully. I had a problem and contacted him and we discussed it. Turned out the connector i was using didn't have the metal connector inside the sheaf (not supplied by him), so no wonder it didn't work! I also ordered some tail light wiring for my 39 sedan from him and it worked fine, as well, so my opinion is based on my experience. From my experience, he aims to please.

This reminds me of the "best oil" question.
Use what you have positive experience with, if no experience yet, choose a recommendation of someone you value their knowledge.

I ordered my wiring harnesses from Dennis Carpenter for my 1942 Ford coupe project. Not sure who his vendor is for them but really user friendly to install with the diagrams. I am not the greatest electrical guy, but I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to rewire the car.

I have purchased complete wiring harnesses for a 34, a 36, a 39 Mercury coupe and a 35 Ford pickup from Tyree. Very pleased with each, I even had him make up a small special harness for me for my pickup, again the 35. All were first class materials and craftsmanship. Very pleased with him. The last time I ordered something he was in the process of training a grandson, I believe, to help him in the business.

We bought all Bauer Electronics wire harnesses for my 52 pick up and everything went well except for the cross over wire was too short. Bauer sent me a replacement wire that was longer right away to replace the short one at no charge. That was the only hiccup. I think the wiring looked good, but I have nothing to compare it to. I think all of these options mentioned uses vinyl coated wire with a cloth cover just for the looks correct?

Pretty much any harness you buy from any vendor is made by Bauer. Exceptions are: Rhode Island, Narragassett (sp), and Sacramento vintage ford. The other exception is plug wires.

.

All I can say is that we bought every harness it takes to completely rewire our '37 Coupe a little over a year ago from Michael at "3rd Gen", and whoever made them up sure did an exquisite job. The harnesses all pretty-much fell together with no problems and is performing flawlessly. It's pretty hard to beat MOST any product you get at 3rd Gen, not to mention the friendly, knowledgeable and prompt service.

I recently re-wired my ‘38.
I had a body harness, headlight harness, tailight/brake/fuel gauge harness, and headlight bucket harnesses.
I checked with Rhode Island wiring first. They were very helpful but stated at minimum 15 week wait.
I was able to find what I needed through eBay and the well known vendors (Carpenter, Sacramento Ford, etc. I was able to get some pretty good deals on eBay!
Overall, I was pleased with the wiring I purchased. I’m not certain it is of 100 point Dearborn Award standard, but the harnesses are all correctly cloth covered and the individual wires are the correct color.
