Again.. ordered an airtex e8902 6 volt pump from rock auto and got what looks like a carter pump which is what i want to replace on my 55..It has no neg or pos markings and does have 8902 stamped in the metal case and a black and red wire protruding from ii ..So what do i have and how do i know which wire to ground...My dillemma is it will cost as much to ship it back as a new one from Canada i suppose..If it is like the carte the car i dont get enough fuel to cruise at 40 or 50 mph..Help someone..and never rock auto again..

If you can confirm that you received an Airtex E8902, that pump delivers 2.5 -4 psi and should provide enough pressure to do the job. The original mechanical Y-block fuel pump delivered up to 5 psi.
Airtex also offers a higher pressure 6-volt electric pump but I didn't write the number down. Not sure which carb you are using but I would be concerned with going to a higher psi, as you need to keep pressure below what might inundate the float in the carburator. If that happens, you will flood the carb and kill the engine. Then you go installing a regulator. IMO, there are no quality, reliable regulators, not even the Holley, so you keep having to replace them. Lots of trouble, lots of breakdowns, lots of expense. No thanks.
For my money, I'll retain the mechanical fuel pump. It should give you reliable service for years if you drive the car often and keep Lucas fuel additive in the tank to fight ethanol deposit buildup in the fuel pump and carb.

The general rule of thumb is red wires are for power and black is for ground.
Only on a Negative ground vehicle.

On the new fuel pump: Red = Positive and Black = Negative

Ford coupe,
Is your '55 still Positive ground? If so, the red wire will connect to the body (or frame) of the car and the black wire will go to your power source switch.
