Air Fuel Mixture/How much?

Any thoughts on how far to turn the choke stick?

I'm currently turning it about 1/4 turn counter clockwise.

If it cranks a few times before starting, gas starts dripping out of the carb pretty good. Is this normal?

thanks,
Banky

Well, turning it will enrich your flow, and all carbs are unique. Generaly open it 1/4 turn, set your throttle about 3 clicks down, advance set fully up (rearded), fuel On, Key On, Pull Choke out and crank starter intil it fires.. let loose of choke and pull advance down (advancing) about 3-5 clicks,, When the running smooths out, you can turn the GAV (choke stick)knob out (CCW) until it runs at it's fastest and smoothest setting.. Note this setting as it will likely be your standard starting enrichment.. Once the car warms up, you can adjust the GAV back in (CW) until it seems to be a bit hesitant in acceleration.. that's your 'economy' setting...

Let us know if this helps or if I'm all wet :)

I'll give Dave an "A" for his Starting/GAV settings. If you line 10 A's up in a row and
fire them up, chances are there will be some variance in settings on the GAV for all of
the cars. When mine is stone cold, I usually open the GAV 1/2 turn and when it warms up I usually close it down to about 1/4-1/8.

Might be a good idea to check your idle air & fuel settings also. When adjusting the idle air screw, be sure it doesn't close all the way down on the spring before you start adjustments. there are a lot of repro idle air screws out there that are too short & prevent a correct adjustment.

IDLE ADJUSTMENT

Before beginning carburetor adjustments close the GAV on the dash, then open ¼ turn. Start the engine as usual and run until the engine is thoroughly warm. Then:

  1. Set the RPM idling screw on the throttle lever to a speed just faster than the point where the engine stalls when the hand throttle on the steering column is all the way up.
  2. Retard the engine by moving the spark control all the way up
  3. Very slowly turn the idle-air thumb screw to the right, or in, until the engine misses or stumbles and mark this position. Then, turn the screw to the left, or out, until the engine misses or stumbles and mark this position. Now adjust the screw about halfway between the marked positions. At this point the engine should be running smoothly and the idle-air screw should be about 1 ½ tuns out from full close.
FINAL ADJUSTMENT

Pull the spark lever down about ¾ of the way and readjust the RPM idling screw on the throttle shaft to the idle speed you prefer. The lowest speed consistent with smooth running is recommended for best fuel economy and reduced gear grinding on shifts

When I shut my car down and turn everything off, does the GAV need to turned off or in all the way each time? Thanks

Airsho93,

You do not need to shut down the GAV when you turn off the engine.
I'm assuming that you turn off the gas at shutdown ?
