Has anyone had any issues with the aftermarket gas tanks leaking such as Spectra. I have one that is leaking at the seam where the two halves are put together. Are the bonded together or soldered? I'm sure this Ethenol gas is probably part of the problem.
No problem with the one I got for my '55 wagon. Very good quality, perfect fit, sturdy as a Sherman tank. I believe they use some variation of resistance weld they run all round the perimeter seam. It is identical to the factory weld in appearance.
You're correct. The tank looks good and seems to fit well. But if filled over half tank it leaks all the way across the seam on the front. The tank was in the car when purchased and looks like aftermarket as it has the silver coating on the outside. I'm thinking this tank may be around 10 years old or just prior to when the ethanol gas was introduced. I remember when ethanol was first introduced some people in my area had problems with coated tanks.
Sid...............my 50 that you worked on had a gas leak around the sending unit area. It was recommended to me put JB Weld water seal on that area. It worked and has not leaked at all.
I've not had any experience with the stuff but might an internal tank sealer coating work for you?
Or... replacing the tank would be less trouble than a roadside BBQ
This tank had a problem in that area also even with a new O ring seal. I thought that was my only problem. I got a role of gas proof cork gasket material and made a gasket and along with the O ring that sealed the sender unit very well. I put about 12 gallons of gas in the tank and plain as day it is leaking out of the seam in front where the two halves are mated. I got an original tank out of the parts car and it is at the rad. shop now being cleaned. This is the Starliner.....Do you mean car-BQ
