I just bought a 27 ford coupe that was in a barn for 50 years and upon looking at the gas tank, I found it had this screw in gas gauge with a cork float. it is called "little wonder" on the face and it still seems to work. Are these worth anything?
If the cork has not been sitting in ethonol gasoline, it might not need replaced. The alcohol disolves the shellac that coats the cork. When the shellac is gone, the cork becomes waterlogged. The Model "A" floats worked for decades, before ethonol. MIKE
The cork still looks ok. I filled up a glass of water and dropped it in slowly and the gauge moved. The cork is sealed inside a tube, it is not like an A cork float.
It's still a 50+ year old cork float and whether or not it has been exposed to ethanol gas is besides the point. Corks get old and dry out. Even in a tube the gas has to get in to make it go up and down. Cool find, have fun with it and the coupe.
