Adjusting timing

I don't think I would attempt it any other way. You MUST be at TDC to accurately set timing and using the timing pin in the cam gear removes all doubt.

If the engine runs you can use the spark adjusting lever to figure out the timing. With the engine idling move the lever up all the way. The engine should slow down. Now slowly pull the lever down. The engine will speed up. As you continue to lower the lever there will be a position where the engine no longer speeds up. If the position is around the 9 or 10 o'clock position your timing is good. If it is higher your timing is too advanced. If it is lower your timing is to retarded.
